Imagine if you had a million dollars, or 34.5 billion. Would you keep it all to yourself, or would you give back? With a net worth of 34.5 billion dollars, MacKenzie Scott has donated about 19 billion to 1,600 different charitable organizations.
MacKenzie Scott is the 40th richest person in the world, but she’s giving back in a more significant way than all the others above her. “’It’s a very transformative gift in more ways than one,'” Wayne A. I. Frederick, the president of Howard University said in an article in the New York Times. The reason she is such an important person is because she is doing something good with her money. She’s doing something good not only for her, but something for millions of people. So many global problems are due to shortage of money, yet there are so many people who have millions that they don’t share. If everyone who had so much would just give a little, so many world problems would be much smaller.
Born in the San Francisco area, Scott grew up wealthy with her two other siblings. Her passion for writing started at an early age, she later grew up to publish two books. One of the most important topics to her is bullying. In 2014, she started an anti-bullying organization called Bystander Revolution. This organization strives to give solutions to bullying and ways to take away the power of bullying. “Simple acts of kindness, courage, and inclusion anyone can use to take the power out of bullying,” says the Bystander Revolution website.
If everyone donated the way Scott does, the world would be a better place–a place of giving and selflessness, that’s the world I want to live in.
