On a random Tuesday in March, freshman Josie Chirco and her friends decided that every Tuesday from then on, they would not wear socks to school. They named that special day, “Toes Out Tuesday.” Little did they know that that silly little ritual would spark a school-wide trend.
“It’s really exciting to see so many people participating in Toes Out Tuesday. This was only supposed to be a thing with me and my friends; it surprised me how it spread like it did,” Chirco explained. “ I mean, I posted a picture of us on my Snapchat story with our sock-free feet in sandals with the caption, ‘Toes Out Tuesday’ and I guess from there, the rest is history.”
The #FreeTheFoot movement has been spreading throughout Clarkston Junior High like wildfire. Students of all grades and demographics have come together to break the social norm of wearing socks. Freshman Nash Wolcott, an avid supporter of the movement says, “It has been amazing to finally break free from having to wear socks, especially seeing people wearing socks with sandals; I hate seeing people wear socks with sandals.”
Originally happening on only one day of the week, the #FreeTheFoot movement has now sought to encompass other days of the week such as “Wiggle Them Wednesday” and “Feet Out Friday.”
With her movement’s newfound popularity, Chirco desires to send a deeper message to people, especially to kids, reminding them “to take your socks off, wiggle your toes, and enjoy life as much as you possibly can.”
