For tennis players of all ranks and ages, consistency is one of the biggest factors that determines who improves and who doesn’t. During the high school season, practices and matches are scheduled, coaches are watching, and the pressure pushes players to work harder. However, in the off-season, all of the structure disappears. That is why the off-season is where consistency matters most.
Consistency doesn’t necessarily mean training for hours daily. It can be small habits like practicing footwork, working on form, or hitting with the wall or a friend. CJHS freshman tennis player Emily Duhaime explained, “I think that working on consistency is more important than anything in tennis. I get training from a coach and play matches weekly so I can be a better player by the time my season comes.”
Freshman Carter Bryson, who played for the boys’ JV team last fall, exhibits the effect of consistency, saying, “After the season, I realized I had to be more consistent so I actually started to build better habits. I would say it paid off because I’m winning a lot more of my matches and my hits have gotten a lot better.”
Consistent training also builds mental toughness. When players train without immediate results, they learn patience and discipline, both of which help during the often hours-long matches during the season.
“I think that having a routine during the off-season definitely helped me in my matches during the season, and especially helped when I went to states,” Freshman Harry Jacobson, who played for both JV and varsity teams last season, said.
Ultimately, consistency in the off-season is what builds confidence, endurance, and reliable performance when the season arrives. Players who stay disciplined and have a routine when no one is watching are the ones that improve the most. In tennis, talent and skill can win points, but consistency can win seasons.
