Alani Nu Energy drinks found in Kroger
Since 2024, Alani energy drinks have gained immense popularity among teens and young adults. Alani energy drinks have 0g of sugar and appear to be healthy, but don’t be fooled by the drink’s appearance. As of 2022, research has shown that these energy drinks are causing cardiovascular problems, nervous system disorders, and a rise in blood pressure.
To start, Alani Nu and many other energy drinks are causing hospitalizations and nervous system defects. For example, Harvard Medical School states, “The FDA has received numerous reports linking energy drink consumption to deaths and serious adverse reactions, including elevated blood pressure, convulsions, and heart rhythm abnormalities. Many of these cases have resulted in hospitalizations. From 2022 to 2023, there was a 24.2% increase in cases of pediatric exposure to energy drinks for children and teens under 20 years old, according to America’s Poison Centers.” Many teens do not know the dangers of energy drinks, resulting in cardiovascular problems for the present and future. Not only is the drink filled with artificial sugars, but it also contains ingredients that can lead to a person being hospitalized with nervous system problems.
Secondly, energy drinks are causing tragic cardiovascular problems. For instance, the National Library of Medicine states, “Caffeine induces various acute cardiovascular effects such as an upregulation of circulating catecholamines. Arterial stiffness and endothelium-dependent vasodilatation also result, leading to increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.” This research shows that energy drinks cause stiffness in the arteries/cardiovascular organs. These can ultimately result in negative effects on people’s health due to drinking energy drinks.
Lastly, energy drinks have been shown to raise blood pressure. The Frontiers in Nutrition ran a study on mice that showed how the consumption of energy drinks in the species led to an increase in blood pressure/heart rate. For example, the study claims, “The consumption of ED and sfED significantly altered the blood pressure and plasma concentrations of inflammatory cytokines, and both increased plasma glucose.” Even in animals, energy drinks are causing disruptions in the heart. The evidence proves that energy drinks can have hypertensive effects on blood pressure, leading to heart problems.
Although Alani energy drinks are labeled as having “zero sugar,” they still contain artificial sweeteners and an alarming amount of caffeine. A teenager is only supposed to have up to 100mg of caffeine a day, and the Alani Nu is highlighting the dangers of exceeding that limit. Not only do energy drinks become addictive, but research has also shown that they cause cardiovascular issues, hospitalization, and nervous system disorders. Even if you are up late studying or have an early morning ahead of you, do not throw your health away. Instead, consider making a simple coffee that isn’t as unhealthy, so we can help prevent further health damage.
