According to National University, nearly 60% of jobs in advanced economies are being affected by AI with roughly 30% of U.S. jobs likely to be used with AI by 2030. With an immediate replacement of jobs it is around 6.1%. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but in reality only 6.1% in the world is over 10 million jobs being replaced with AI. Now think about how much 60% could be? I believe continuing to pursue AI will impact everyone extremely negatively, and not only people, but our environment too, and to continue exploring things such as advanced intelligence should be done more safely with more laws put onto the unknown we’re running to. If we’re trusting AI to control military equipment, are you going to start trusting it to raising your kids as well?
To begin with, AI is taking over many jobs across the globe. “300 million jobs could be lost to AI globally, representing 9.1% of all jobs worldwide,” says National University. With many jobs being taken by AI, what is our world going to look like in 10 years? 30-50 years? Will everything be AI sourced? How can we be sure of intelligence that isn’t confirmed correct?
To continue, Artificial Intelligence has already been proved to not be 100% correct all of the time, so how will it help “advance” if it isn’t even sure of the information it’s giving? According to US Sciences, “AI models offer probabilities and therefore carry inherent uncertainty…generative AI can create content, including text, images, audio or video, when prompted by a user, but it is not cognitive and lacks human judgment.”
To end with, it doesn’t only disrupt our job economy, but our environment too. In an article from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it reads, “Beyond electricity demands, a great deal of water is needed to cool the hardware used for training, deploying, and fine-tuning generative AI models, which can strain municipal water supplies and disrupt local ecosystems.” This might not sound like it’s harmful to our environment, but it impacts our world greatly and contributes to global warming.
In conclusion, Artificial Intelligence is still an unknown variable. How can we run towards something blindly without caution with how it could affect our world? We only have one. Introducing safety measures is the smartest way to limit the blow back of AI and protect ourselves; it’s easier to build back up again with less damage. Would you rather rebuild a wall or a city?
