Everybody Screams:
This song kicks off the album with a bold theme of being fame hungry and not wanting to leave the spotlight. Even though there’s “blood on the stage,” she can’t stop performing because that’s the only place she feels like she can be herself.
One of the Greats:
This song looks back on Welch’s career as she reflects on how everything she’s been through is worth it and had a hard time leaving something she loves, even though it was to get a life-saving surgery. “I did my best, tried to impress, my childhood dream made flesh”–this line illustrates her passion for music and how hard she worked to earn the career she has.
Witch Dance:
“Witch Dance” discusses Welch’s near death experience, due to an ectopic pregnancy. She sings about her spiritual journey and how this experience tested her religious beliefs.
Buckle:
This song creates a metaphor of how she’s hung up on someone; she’s stuck on “the buckle of your belt.” She expresses the frustration she feels because “a crowd of thousands came to see me,” but all she can think about is this person.
The Old Religion:
This song is another reflection on the spiritual journey she was forced to go through. It expresses how scared she was during this experience.
Music by Men:
“Music by Men” represents the traditional roles of men and women in today’s society. The lyric “You have a bigger ego than you think you do Slide down in my seat so as not to threaten you” demonstrates how she feels she needs to be seen as less than, especially in her industry she feels that it’s the only way she can be successful.
