Music is everything. It can be made from anything, and can be listened to through any emotion you are feeling. While we listen to a lot of different songs and have tons of playlists, here are each of our top 4 favorite stand-out songs that we think are worth a listen.
Kristjan Berisaj Top 4:
Loose Cannon-Puzzle: I like this song because it has a great beat with a good tune. It also speaks in ways you have to look at from a different angle, but once you understand it, it sounds great. I also like the song because it goes from a sad beat, that sounds really good, then a beat that sounds happy and all cheerful, then a beat that feels like a million things at once. I believe it shows how life can be sad, happy, and then you’re all over the place type of thing.
2 Birds-Regina Spektor: I like this song because it’s calm, the beat is also very “heavenly” with the words that you have to think about: “Two birds on a wire one tries to fly and the other says I’m tired,” the wire being relationships, and life in general. “One tries to fly and the other says I’m tired”– one is ready to try for freedom and one is scared to try new stuff, saying “I’m tired” is a lie just to stay.
Rises The Moon-Liana Flores: This song is in my top five because you can play it with any emotions you are feeling: sad, happy, annoyed, it’s just a song that feels good with anything, and it can’t ever go wrong in any situation. The lyrics are also very relatable: “days feel sometimes as if they’ll never end.” It doesn’t take a mastermind to get what they’re saying. An example is school, the day feels like it goes on forever. “Sun digs its heels to taunt you.” Another example: the sun taunts you while coming down, but that’s not the meaning behind the words. “Sun digs its heels to taunt you.” It’s an emotional weight that comes down when the moon comes.
Count Me Out-Kendrick Lamar: This song’s intro is very good. In my opinion, it’s better than the rest of the song itself. But back on topic, this song is about a deep personal track on self growth and being better. It’s also about overcoming your ego and your hatred for someone. An example of this is “I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime, tell them tell them the truth.” What this means is you’re talking, but your brain wants to say something else. “I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime,” this is you saying this to someone. Then “tell them tell them the truth” is your ego telling you otherwise. I like this song because sometimes it’s very relatable and very hitting in some cases, making the song a million times better and the lyrics aren’t too hard to understand. Overall, the song is about you taking over your ego.
Alejandro Gonzalvo’s Top 4:
Ghost Town-Kanye West, PARTYNEXTDOOR: This song to me is a masterpiece. This song can be played when you’re happy, when you’re sad, or when you just need a good song to listen to. This song has been with me through the thick and the thin, on road trips, with friends, and when the chorus starts, “And nothing hurts anymore I feel kinda free.” I levitate into another world. Ghost Town was the first Kanye song that I ever listened to and it put me on.
Valerie-Amy Whinehouse, Mark Ronson: Valerie is a classic with a catchy tune and a good beat. It’s a good song for a car ride or to get into a better mood. The lyrics are a little scathing, but the tune is so good that you don’t even notice.
Vida En El Espejo-Enjambre: Vida En El Espejo (Life in the mirror) is a song in Spanish, yet the singer’s passion and perfect accompaniment of instruments help it transcend language. It’s a kind of sad and freeing song that you can sing along to. The song uses the metaphor of living in a mirror to symbolize the struggle of confronting hard truths in life.
Mayagüez-Los Wálters: This song is also in Spanish and just like Vida En El Espejo, it also transcends language barriers with its catchy lyrics and its light tune. The song sounds like a beautiful beach day in peak summer. The hook of the song, “Me voy para el west, baby, me voy para Mayagüez,” in English translates to, “I’m heading to the west, baby, I’m going to Mayagüez.” Mayagüez is a city on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The song perfectly captures a carefree getaway.
