The Clarkston boys varsity soccer team has been on fire this season, demonstrating impressive talent, teamwork, and determination that have led to a series of dominating wins. Under Coach Ian Jones, the team has shown remarkable skill and sportsmanship, making them a team to watch.
Their season began strongly, winning their first two games by large margins. On August 16th, Clarkston defeated Grand Blanc 5-0 away, with senior Jake Sweet scoring twice and juniors Connell Vogelei and Oliver Poploskie each contributing a goal. Sweet reflected, “I felt proud of the team…the way we started off the season by winning 5-0.”
Just two days later, they shut out Holt 5-0, thanks to senior Cole Cooper’s three goals and Sweet’s two. The momentum continued with a 2-1 victory over Rochester Adams, where other senior Fagan Roy netted the winning goal.
On August 26th, the team enjoyed a 2-0 win against Berkley, with goals from Roy and Cooper. However, their undefeated streak was briefly halted by a tough 2-1 loss to rival Oxford High on September 2nd, with Roy scoring their only goal. Despite this setback, Clarkston responded strongly, dominating Rockford 2-0 at the Comet Shootout and then beating Portage Northern 6-0.
Senior Micah Amega emphasized the team’s growth, sharing, “As a team, I believe that we are a more cohesive unit than we were to begin the season, we’re beginning to work well together.”
Junior Adam Perlin expressed his personal goals: “I want to win the state final and hopefully play college soccer.”
On September 9th, the Wolves faced Lake Orion at home, winning 5-0 with Vogelei and Roy both netting two goals, and Poploskie adding one. Poploskie said, “The most rewarding aspect of being part of the soccer team is being able to play with all my friends and a lot of them being people I have known most of my life.”
With numerous victories and a dedicated roster, Clarkston boys soccer is positioned for a strong run in districts. Their teamwork, leadership, and passion continue to shine, making them a team to follow this year.
