This past week, Clarkston Junior High School showed its school spirit through a series of fun dress-up days leading up to the highly anticipated homecoming game and celebration.
The week kicked off on Monday, September 29th, with Camo Day, where students dressed in camouflage apparel. Then, Tuesday, September 30th, was Jersey Day.
On Wednesday, October 1st, students participated in Pink Out Day to raise awareness for breast cancer, demonstrating support for a meaningful cause.
Thursday, October 2nd, saw a team rivalry as 9th grade students wore blue and 8th grade students wore gold. The week wrapped up on Friday, October 3rd, with Neon Out Day, which was also the theme for that night’s homecoming game.
The peak of Spirit Week was the official homecoming celebration on October 4th, themed “Rhythms of Rio,” inspired by Brazilian culture.
Mrs. Allie Dennis, a jack all trades, teaching Honors English 8, Digital Journalism, and Yearbook this year, shared her thoughts on the importance of Spirit Week, “Spirit Week is the perfect time to sport your most outlandish fashion choices!” Dennis explained. “Students and staff can come together to rep their spirit gear in honor of their school, community, and oftentimes, in recognition of a worthy cause.”
When asked about creative ideas for future Spirit Week days, Dennis said, “I would make a ‘Dress as Your Favorite Food’ day because who wouldn’t want to walk around looking like a Crunchwrap Supreme?”
Freshman student Brynn Calka also shared her opinions on this year’s Spirit Week, saying, “My favorite day was Pink Out because a lot of people participated, and it was for a good cause.”
Spirit Week makes school more fun. “It makes things more exciting and different from an average school day,” Calka said.
Some students shy away from spirit week in fear of judgment. Both Dennis and Calka offered advice to anyone hesitant to participate.
“Stop caring about what other people think; be silly, be bold, be original,” Dennis said. “Life is too short not to celebrate Spirit Week. Wear that full neon outfit like you own the place!”
“Just go for it,” Calka encouraged. “It’s homecoming spirit week, and you don’t want to look back wishing you had participated.”
Clarkston Junior High’s Spirit Week was great way to build school spirit and community, and create memories for students and staff this year.
