Freshman football wide receiver Cole Gerling shares what he loves most about the Clarkston program, Gerling says “My favorite thing about being part of the Clarkston program is the coaching staff and how they push you, as well as the history and tradition.”
Gerling points out how much of an impact Clarkston coaches have had on him and their ability to help him improve his game, by pushing him to his full potential.
Gerling’s success through the season led to him helping his team record a perfect 2-0 record.
He shares a varsity player in his position he looks up to in order to improve his game, “I look up to Hank Hornung (Class of 2026 WR/CB) because I love how he plays and I also love his attitude on the field.”
The big plays and attention drawing catches may be all you see from Cole Gerling, but no athlete is perfect. Failure is likely, but the way Gerling responds to failure says everything you need to know about him.
“I respond with adversity, when I fail my team picks me up and when my teammates fail, I do the same for them; we all try to have next play mentality,” Gerling said.
“Next play mentality” has helped Gerling frequently in his game, and shows his outstanding mindset.
Speaking of outstanding mindset, the things you do to prepare for a game determines your mindset throughout the game. This looks different for all athletes, but Cole explains how he gets game ready by “listening to music and even calling my mom to calm me down and just talk to her before the game.” It gets his mind in the right place and helps his team win.
Cole Gerling is a great football player, and his skills make him stand out on the field, but Cole’s ability to respond to failure, his growth mindset, and his love for the Clarkston program is truly what separates him from the rest. Catch him in his game tomorrow as he travels to Lake Orion for an Oakland County rivalry. Go Wolves!
