Why are Guns so common in the United States? They shouldn’t be used as harmful things unless needed to protect oneself. Students shouldn’t be afraid to go to school; people shouldn’t be worried to go to church, or just walk around in their hometown.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the highest monthly recording of deaths caused by Gun Violence in the United States is 27,300. So far in the year 2025, the average number of deaths caused by guns is 11,197. Gun violence has seen a large increase in the United States. Are guns just used for our safety? Why are guns so easy to obtain nowadays? Tragic deaths happen daily because of these weapons. So many shootings happen at schools; it’s horrible. Students shouldn’t have to go to school scared that one day they won’t ever get to go home. As guns should be used for safety and dangerous situations, they are harming the development of education and the trust in a daily school routine.
Guns are used for suicide and homicide, but did you know that there are more suicides caused by guns than there are homicides? The website Public Health states that “27,300 people died by firearm suicide, 17,927 died by firearm homicide, 463 died by unintentional gun injury, and an estimated 604 were fatally shot by law enforcement.”
This just proves that most of the time, gun violence isn’t used for good reasons that help this country. Firearm ownership and access are associated with increased suicide.
Guns should be used for safety reasons only. There have been times when even law enforcement has used guns as a threat or in unnecessary situations. But there have also been plenty of times when police or law enforcement have used guns in the right situations and have protected citizens. The website Every Town Research states that “States with strong laws see less gun violence. Indeed, the states that have failed to put basic protections into place-‘ national failures’ on our scale- have a rate of gun deaths two and a half times higher than the states that are national gun safety leaders.” This shows that the stronger the state and the law is, the less violence there will be. States need to start enforcing more rules about guns and do more about it.
School systems should do better about their security in their schools so that fewer school shootings would happen throughout America. CJHS student Stella Smith talks about what she thinks about the school system. Smith states, “There needs to be a change in the school security, the amount of school shootings is out of control.” This shows that even students can see how the school shootings have impacted students lives. Kids experiencing shooting can impact them in many negative ways, they could start struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc.
Gun violence shouldn’t be as common as it is, and we as Americans can change that. Some might say that law enforcement are just doing their jobs, but killing or shooting innocent people is not doing their jobs. More laws should be put in place about guns and the killing of other people. And even others might say that schools handle gun violence and shootings in schools perfectly fine, but then why are there school shootings daily in the US? Students killed by their own classmates is not okay.
In conclusion, the gun violence in the United States of America needs to be handled; it really is a loss to America. Innocent people’s lives were taken–people that just needed help and needed to be saved, their lives have been taken by an object.
